FAQs

Am I eligible to race?

Any student in the Lansing Youth Sailing program school districts in grades 9-12 can practice and compete in the interscholastic sailing teams in MISSA-sanctioned events. Students in grades 6-8 are able to practice with the team and compete in middle school events. No prior sailing experience is required!

Do I need sailing experience?

Sailing experience is not required to participate on the team, but is encouraged. You are welcome to join without prior experience! It is a benefit for team members to participate in the Intro and Intermediate Lansing Sailing Club youth summer sailing camps.

Where is practice?

Practice is at the Lansing Sailing Club on Lake Lansing.

What do I need for gear?

Closed-toe non-marking shoes are an absolute must-have to participate. You will also want to have a swimsuit or clothes you are fine with being in the lake with for warmer months and a drysuit and warmer layers for cooler months. Drysuits and dinghy boots can be rented from LSC. Life jackets are available to borrow from Lansing Sailing Club but it is recommended that you acquire your own as they are required to go sailing. Sailing gloves or another type of reinforced gloves are recommended to prevent rope burn on your hands when handling lines. You will also want a towel and a change of spare clothes for after practice.

How long is the high school sailing season?

High school sailing is a dual season sport with both a fall and spring season. The Fall season begins in late August and runs into mid-November. The Spring season starts in mid-March when the ice has melted off of the lake and runs into early June. Summer sailing programs are available through LSC as well!

Anything else?

Sailing will test the competitor’s agility, nimbleness, balance, and strength. It is a significant benefit to competitors to work arm, leg, and core muscle groups in preparation for the season. Here are some recommended workouts and some workout tips.

Training Resources

Training is key for our program to be able to make progress and continue to increase our competitiveness at regattas. Since we start with sailors at all levels of experience ranging from never sailed before to those that have sailed their whole lives, it is imparative that we have several ways for the sailors to learn and grow. Here we will be keeping a collection of references for training (videos, photos/illustrations, books, etc) to aid the Team, prospective sailors, and the community to learn to sail and compete.
