The Program

The Lansing Youth Sailing program was founded in 2016 by Mike Moody and Susanna Tellschow to make it possible for high school students in the Lansing area to compete in sailing in the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) conference. The program had one sailor for its inaugural season, but has continued to grow over the years. The program has been highly successful in making sailing available for local youth to learn and thrive in racing. Program teams have went on to compete at regional and conference-level events.

The Boats

Club 420

The Club 420 is the primary boat of competition in the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) conference and is a widely popular one-design racing boat among sailors across the globe. A version of the 420 is sailed in international and Olympic competition. The Club 420 is 420 centimeters long, or about 14 feet, and is sailed by two sailors. The skipper is in control of the boat and is responsible for steering with the rudder and trimming the mainsail, while the crew is responsible for trimming the jib, manning the centerboard, ballast, and watching the surroundings of the boat. The current fleet of 420s at LSC was purchased in 2023 from Yale University. The purchase of the fleet was made possible by the efforts of Adam and Deann Falkowski and LSC.

The Conference

The Bath High School Sailing Team is a member of the Northeast League of the Midwest Interscholastic Sailing Association (MISSA) conference, which is part of a larger national conference known as the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA). Bath typically competes against teams from across the state of Michigan and northern Indiana and Ohio. The availability of regattas through MISSA and ISSA allows for opportunities to compete in regional, national, and connections to international competitions.
